Benchmarking
Comparing metrics against reference points — internal history, market peers, or published industry bands — with methodology awareness.
Benchmarking locates your numbers: is 3% click-to-reg good? Against what market, traffic mix and measurement definition?
Doing it honestly
Internal benchmarks (cohort-over-cohort, market-over-market) are methodologically clean and underused; industry benchmarks arrive definition-fuzzy (whose “conversion,” measured how?) and survivorship-flavored — calibrate direction from them, not targets. The affiliate-program use case: per-source benchmarking against program medians identifies outliers for review in both directions — the underperformers to reprice and the overperformers to study, retain and clone.
